What is Valentine's Day? What's soooooo special about it?
Here's a brief history that I got from Wikipedia.
"Valentine's Day or Saint Valentine's Day is an occasion celebrated on February 14 by many people throughout the world. In the West, it is the traditional day on which lovers express their love for each other by sending Valentine's cards, presenting flowers, or offering confectionery. The holiday is named after two among the numerous Early Christian martyrs named Valentine. The day became associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished."
And of course there are other legends and myths about Valentine's Day. If you are interested you can read it from here

Why do I talk about this day? Actually to me, it's been a very controversial topic. Recently I was at a dinner with my family and dad's friends. The mothers were all talking about Valentine's Day. The dads on the hand was on the other side of the table pretending not to listen to their wifes :p
Auntie 1 : Wah, Valentine's Day coming, so you got any plans?
Auntie 2 : No la, no plans. Husband so unromantic one. Shoudl bring us for a candle light dinner without the kids. (purposely saying it loudly, aim towards her husband)
Auntie 3 : Ya la ya la. Even a bouquet of flowers, nowadays husbands so unromantic, even the kids are more romantic.
It's funny listening to them gossiping to each other while the husbands on the other side chose to ignore them. The uncles on the other hand were talking about this.
Uncle 1 : Valentine's coming, you not going anywhere? Wifes all making noise already.
Uncle 2 : Haha, aiya they like that one la. It's normal.
Uncle 3 : How about you come over to my house and then we open a bottle and drink with the wifes. (said loudly)
Funny, now the wifes ignored them and for no reason I got drag into this conversation.
Auntie 2 : Ming, Valentine's day very important day right? Should take your love ones out riteeee?
I was forced to just smile.
Auntie 1 : See even the kids are more romantic nowadays...
The uncles gave me a chilling stare.
I guess to me, Valentine's Day has a different meaning for everybody.
Some find it over-hyped and over-commercialize that they said everyday should be Valentine's Day not just that day. To them, V-day is just over crowded restaurant and also over priced gifts equals to stupid people. A stalk of rose which normally cost RM2-3 is priced at minimum RM10 when it's near Valentine's Day. Look at some of the prices here. Dinners at restaurant usually only serve their set meals for two which cost at least 50%-100% more than normal days. Sometimes some restaurant actually try to sell off their old food stocks (dishing out the things people don't usually order) so they can clear their freezers. Seriously, you will know what I mean, business minded will be business minded people.
Thank you Pearly for reminding me about business minded people during our trip to Malacca Satay Celup where they used back the same sauce for other customers.

The other group of people would definitely be the pro-Valentine's people. This are the people who think Valentine's Day is a special day that serves a romantic purpose. Who cares if it's expensive? Why so cheapskate? It's just once a year and it should be treated specially. Making her happy would make me happy. That kind of thing if you get me. Romantic candle light dinner, romantic places to be together, cute romantic gifts and a great time together! Who knows you might get lucky later on at night? Wink wink. I am just joking. :)

As for me, I do celebrate Valentine's day. I do buy or make a simple but meaningful gift for my love one. If possible I would celebrate, a few days after or a few days before, have a nice dinner or lunch. Some might say it's cheating and so on but at least the meaning is there. I am not a rich person anyway, at least not yet. Many people does this if your partner is also someone like that.
This year, as some of you would know, San just left Malaysia so I didn't get to celebrate with her physically (don't think too far you naughty people out there) but we celebrated in virtually. Just opening our pre given present in from of the web cam. Hey, it's better than nothing. At least I get to see her happy face :)

So Happy Valentine's Day to those who are braving the crowded roads and restaurants basically crowded everywhere. Your pockets must be burning holes right now but you get one big reward which is seeing your love ones happy. To those who are not celebrating Happy Valentine's Day to you too. At least your pockets are still with you :D
Yours Truly,
The one and only,
Jason Ng
